i need to drill a couple holes in a piece of 3/4 round stock to install cotter pins are there any tips or tricks to doing so with a regular drill  i do not have access to a drill press at the moment. also what is the best way of finding the dead center of a piece of round stock?
Reply:I take a sharp file and just make the slightest flat spot on the stock prior to center punching, generally a 32nd of an inch or less-just kiss it with the file.  I would also clamp the round stock in a piece of small channel to help hold it.  Unless you make up a wooden jig to hold the material and guide the drill angle, it will be pretty hard to get the hole across the stock straight without a drill press.. As to finding dead center, assuming you mean the end of the stock, use a centering head that comes with a good combination square, or you can lay the stock on a perfectly flat surface and use a pair of dividers. Set the dividers ever so slightly larger than where you estimate the center of the shaft to be, set one point where the stock touches the flat surface, and scribe a short arc on the end of the stock. Then turn the stock 90 degrees, do it again, etc until you have four arcs. Dead center is in the middle of the little "box" made by the four arcs. If the box is too large, reduce the width of the dividers, do it again, and get a smaller box.Last edited by Aeronca; 11-27-2016 at 12:03 AM.
Reply:There are a number of devices to help keep you centered on the shaft. Some cheap some not so cheap. Or you could build your own. Scroll down the page a bit on the second one. They are not perfect and their accuracy depends on the precision the tool is made with and your skill and ingenuity with a hand drill but they can usually get you closer than freehand.http://www.ebay.com/itm/222126680631http://advrider.com/index.php?thread...repair.309892/This is another one:https://www.walmart.com/ip/General-T...Guide/16491383Last edited by Meltedmetal; 11-27-2016 at 08:20 AM.Reason: additional---Meltedmetal

Reply:Center punch the hole location and I like to use a center drill to start holes when drilling at an angle or on a round surface.  Their thick body prevents them from bending and sliding around on the uneven surface like a regular drill bit does.   HF sells a cheap fixture to line up holes on round stock.  About $6 when I bought mine about 7-8  years ago.
Reply:IF you are trying to get the same center plane for marking, lay a piece of small angle iron like 1/2 x 1/2 on top and draw a line . Drilling will be another story. Drill presses are those things that people buy and use it once . I usually find them on Craigslist pretty cheap. You should be able to find a bench type for $50 and a floor model for $100.  I did .

Post your location and maybe a member near you that will do it. If you're near Northern Illinois come on over.

Reply:okay guys thanks alot for the tips i had to kind of get the job done quick before snow flies. so i just used my grinder to make a liitle flat and eyeballed center and centerpunched and drilled it. miraculously the holes came out pretty straight. its for a plow frame im building for my garden tractor. i should buy some of those guides for next time though.
Reply:These guides would come in handy even with a drill press. I especially like the ones for angle. I have tried to drill a hole in angle at the point or edge and that is a disaster!!!
Reply:I saved this one for some (forgotten) reason, but you can drill out hex nuts to use as a guide:
