Hi,I have had a Lotos LTP5000D (240V) plasma cutter for several years, hobby use. It has performed well for me with occasional use. I recently replaced the torch with one that was supposed to be a direct replacement but have an issue. The pilot arc will strike but go out very quickly. It works fine if I am near the metal to be cut but if not close or there is a gap such as in expanded metal the pilot arc will go out. Anyone have any thoughts on this. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks,Hobart 190 migLincoln/Century 140 migLincoln buzz boxChicago Electric cutoff sawLotos LTP5000D Plasma CutterHMC Swivel head band saw
Reply:Check the nozzle, make sure it is rated for the amps you are going to cut with.haven't been near a plasma like yours but I can speak in general. Two things will cause a short pilot. air pressure set to high. wrong nozzle/tip size for the plasma machine. An 80 amp nozzle on a 40 amp machine sometimes won't pilot right but will cut fair if the torch is placed next to the metal.High air pressure will blow the arc out. High air pressure does not cut better. It really wears the nozzle and electrode out faster.Torches are designed to operate at a certain pressure plus minus 5 psi.Operating outside this setting does not cut better only the consumables die faster. |
