I'm modifying an old 5 ton rated trailer to convert it from a fender type to a flat deck. Here is the old trailer with the wood deck removed. It was a 1985 vintage 8' wide x 14' long trailer with around a 4' dovetail.
After modifications, the main deck will be a flat top, 18' long and it will have a 5' dovetail. It will have hydraulic brakes with an electrically operated master cylinder. This will be an all-around trailer for me that I can use in lieu of my 37' hydraulic dovetail for smaller loads and tighter locations. I'd like to be able to haul vehicles, tractors, heavy equipment (<10k lbs), lumber, etc. with the modified one. On the original version, the space in-between the fenders was too narrow for me to haul some of my tractors and skid loader; hence the need to modify. Here are some progress pix: The first one is with the frame upside down with the spring hangers removed for repositioning.
The one below is of the stretched frame (length and width) with everything tacked up.
I'd like to build a set of two or three flip-over ramps at the back so that when they are in the travel position the top side of the deck is totally flat - in essence making it a flat 23' deck.The ramp system would be something like this:
Instead of angle iron I'm planning to use wood on the dovetail portion, and expanded grating for the ramp surface. The grating would be similar to this:
I'm struggling just a bit with coming up with the hinge design. Looking at similar trailers going down the road I've seen some with what appears to be a single hinge (with springs to help lift the ramps), and others with a double hinge.Does anybody have any links to hinge design for something like this that they can share with me, or other suggestions?
