Hi, I'm new at welding in general and trying to learn how to tig.Does anyone have any experience or info about the Linde pwc-5? I know someone who  has one that he bought at a government surplus. It's a older welder and has the original torch but its missing the pedal, it's water cooled. This is the info I have:Type PWC-5 SN X 81 -W09028 input 115 V 15 AMP output 40 Volt 15 AMP 85% duty cycleBasically what I'm wondering is how thick and how thin is my range of use with this machine.I want it for doing small repairs on stainless, copper. Most of the copper I use is 16gauge to 24gauge copper sheets. (Sometimes a little thicker) And for stainless is mostly for thin stuff that my budget tig would blow righ through. My current tig is a cheap one but it does what I need and I'm looking for something more precise for smaller work.So instead of buying a expensive rig I was thinking I could maybe go for something like the Linde. Any info or experience with this rig would be appreciated, don't wanna buy something that's just gonna take up more room.
Reply:Almost forgot, he has 2 of them, the other one is 10amp 40volt 100% duty cycle, it's got a yellow face like most Linde welders the pwc-5 has a white face. I have picture if needed just don't know how to post them here. Thanks
Reply:Danny,I sold welding supplies 21 years, so take me with a grain of salt. Those Linde machines were mostly manufactured in the 1980's, early 1990's. Linde took over where Union Carbide/Air Products left off. The Linde machines used to be top of the line. They started using platinum coated contacts on their switches and stuff. They got so expensive, priced themselves out of the market. Linde sold to Esab. Esab, killed the Linde line real fast. Parts are obsolete now. Buy one if you want. Just saying,..Eric Sam I am
Reply:Saw that, been trying to look it up for info and can't find mutch. That rig is very mutch top of the line when it was made. He's selling cheap, for that reason I'm considering grabbing both of them for spare parts. He also has the wiring diagrams for it, so that helps alot.
Reply:The tech. school here had a Linde/Union Carbide plasma welder set up from the late 60's that cost over $10K new. They sold or traded it off in the early 90's as it was pretty much obsolete by then. The technology might not be obsolete but the machine was. I think with the modern inverter Tig welders you'd be much better off unless you're producing thousands of high tech. parts for NASA. There's a few of the machines that have been auctioned off. They all came from the Gov't. so likely a few tech. schools had them. They might be a good addition to a welding museum or something.
Reply:Dave,  I run into very few that remember these old units & equipment. TVA in Hartville, TN had some big auctions in the middle 1990's. The built a nuke power plant, then closed it before they trucked plutonium to it. Design flaws is what the local newspapers said. The crap they sold at auction was junk, and flooded the area with the junk. I was working for a supply store in Bowling Green, Ky., 45 minutes north of the TVA plant. I really got sick of people bringing the junk to me, asking me to get it working for them. How the hell was I supposed to make $ working on their junk, even if I did know how to fix it??? They would not pay for it, they wanted it fixed free. At a Miller Electric seminar years ago, a design engineer told me, after 10 years, we don't want you to fix this equipment, want you to buy new!! LOL, Buyer beware.Eric Sam I am
