Hello I am a machinist by trade but I do enjoy welding. I just wish I had enough spare time to devote to getting good at it... I have a Hobart Handler 140, Miller Maxstar 150 1st gen, Just picked up a CST280 in rough shape but working. Smith Oxy-Acet regulators and torches. Which of my 2 Millers would be better to learn how to DC TIG with? I have a "K" cylinder of argon but no foot controls so I will buy one for the welder that I will learn on. Id greatly appreciate your opinions on which will be better to learn on!Thanks,Dan
Reply:i got both. i dont plumb the gas through the 150 or use its timed selenoid. the 280 dont have the option. i like everything manual/external. it seldomly dont make much diff which i use, cuz most dc tig i do is under a 100 amps anyway
Reply:which maxstar? The S will not tig.
Reply:It is the original 150 with the metal wrapper.

Reply:Ahh, forgot about those. Little tanks
Reply:Whichever one you like better... Ideally one with a gas solenoid. You'll run out of amperage on thicker steel with the 150, so IMO the 280 would be better, but depends what you're wanting to do...Murphy's Golden Rule: Whoever has the gold, makes the rules.
Reply:If that is your 150 setup , then just start tig welding. You really do not need a amp control for steel. Also, you may prefer a control at the torch and never use the purchased foot control. |
