Well, I'm usually pretty lucky on used stuff - but this one made it 75 feet and the right side locked up...Everything worked perfect on inspection. Rats.First excavator so this will be a learning curve.

About 60 feet from the trailer and the right side was not giving any power but track was still turning, 15 feet later and it locked.2005 model, I've included a video of the issue.  Right side is lifted off the ground in the video. The hydraulic motor seems to turn and provide power both directions? To me it feels like the planetary gear set has something stuck, or the front idler bearing has failed?Didn't have time to do anything except look for a rock lodged in the tracks, then I had to leave - back to it on Thursday with the game plan of removing the track and starting there.Any and all suggestions are appreciated

Reply:The hard stop with the clunk noise has me thinking planetary issue. Pull a plug and do a little magnet fishing.
Reply:Sorry I'm of no help, but I enjoyed your 55 gallon drum video.  It reminded me of photonicinduction's coconut video...

Reply:Hard to tell from the video... but it looks like the track stops before the sprocket... so While the clunking and stuff does sort of point towards a planetary issue I would actually loosen the track and see if the idler isn't stuck(shot) or maybe there's a rock lodged in there stalling it.

Reply:I just recently had a rock lodged between the idler and the bracket on my Cat 931B causing the track to stop when in reverse. I saw some gouging on the idler and closer inspection revealed the rock in-between the idler brackets and couldn't be seen. Had to reach in to feel it. Got lucky that after several attempts back and forth with the track lifted, part of the rock sheared off and I could get it out. If you can loosen the track enough to lift it off the sprocket could see if the sprocket turns properly on its own. Could check the idler as well.Last edited by Welder Dave; 10-14-2020 at 03:32 AM.

Reply:Update: no stuck rock unfortunately.Opened the drains to check the oil condition in the final drive...nope... condition: missing.

I flushed it out with diesel, then spun it with diesel in it, drained and repeated several times. Then used rear end oil to fill, spin and drain several times. It functions, is noisy and clunks some, but doesn't get stuck. The floating seal between the hydraulic side and gear side is completely out, the oil pours out of it.

Reply:Lowest quote for replacing the seal is $900 + parts. One place said 17 hrs labor or wants $9500 for a new one.Online orders are looking like $2,000.Tough to shop local this way.

Reply:Holy cow! Previous owner was playing "Swamp Monster" with a bad seal in some pretty soupy mud. (Ask me how I know...)  I really doubt that just a seal will cure that, My guess is all the needle bearings and planet pins are already gone, and the rest is following. A good used unit complete would be my choice for a part time machine. And I would be suspect of the motor seal too, it might be next, silt seems to get into everything.

Reply:Somebody got rid of that machine just in the nick of time, wonder what the other side looks like inside.
Reply:If you're mechanically inclined you could probably rebuild it yourself for just the cost of the internal parts. I've done a couple of them in the past, but I'm not sure if they were quite as bad as that one...

Reply:Man that sucks. If you swap this one out you can dig into it and see what it looks like. I would look at the other side to be safeMillermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer

Reply:You might want to check the swing motor gear box also.... I don't know if that one is oil bath or not.... but just to make sure it has oil would be a good thing

Reply:People get old. People park a machine outdoors, five years later they feel it is good as it was when parked. Charlie Abbott was such a man. He ran a two man excavation company 60 years. At some point he lost his one employee, never hired another. A man in his seventies, he fussed around on some jobs that weren't big, enlisting his wife for shuttle duty.He never said, but I'd guess he failed a CDL physical. The machines got old sitting around. He couldn't bring himself to part with anything. Machines didn't move for at least ten years.Since Charlie's death, his brother made his widow a package deal offer, trucked dozens of machines from CT to VT. One by one Charlie's nephew has repaired to function, if not reliable condition, & sold them. They have a IH 175 crawler loader offered now. Tracks were new 20 years ago, only a few hours on them, but most pins are seized. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.

Used the mini excavator to rake up all the crap into piles and dig out the rock/junk/boulder pile.Bobcat got rid of it all.The corral behind it is next, then keep prepping the property for sale.  Sweetie is prepping/repairing the house, I've got the outside, shop and outbuildings.

Reply:Grade 00 grease or JD corn head grease are other options probably similar to Cenex 365. Stays put when still but flows when parts are moving. Used in leaking gearboxes. I put 00 grease in a leaking bottom roller on my Cat.
Reply:Farm oil makes a fluid gear grease as well. Grade 0 I believe comes in a pint or quart squirt bottle.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer

Lots of things like this in the world but the best things are the ones engineered to do it for a specific purpose like paint and that grease, for example.
Reply:Wow what a way to derail a thread, first we are fixing a mini excavator, now we are watching paint dry!  LOLMike
Reply:No applause, just throw money. Have heard that you need to make sure the corn head grease is compatible with the existing gear lube/oil or clean everything up and just use the corn head grease by itself. I used the grade 00 grease because I wasn't sure what was used in the track roller originally.
