I can see how a belt grinder would be handy in my shop, but the cost of a good one + space limitations had me daydreaming again.

All scrap: 3/16" bottom plate and some bent and shaped 22ga (I think - plenty stiff) for the square handle rest/clamp. The front curled piece is another part from my scraper discards. Besides rushing the beads, I'm quite pleased with the result. Ordered some silicon oxide belts but the wood ones prove it will work just fine for what I need.

Reply:Looks good. I put round bar in a 1/2" drill and turn it that way. Nice even point.  Looks like you are sanding rebar, but it is just a tip for the future. Reply:While we are on the subject of foot switches...  I have several and I would like to pass along a “what NOT to do” tip. I thought I was being smart mounting this foot switch for a bandsaw’s permanent “ handy but out of the way” installation.

And yes I know it should be obvious that you lose stability with one foot raised (with fingers adjacent to a fast moving sharp blade) but in my defence I never finished high school. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I bought this one from Amazon and it's definitely worth the extra $$$$.A 1900 box with a switch, outlet, and plug in cord is something to consider. Power to switch activates outlet. Leave sander switch on and use switch in 1900 box.I made this when my HF sander switch broke. https://www.amazon.com/MLCS-9080-Bil...switch&sr=8-15Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:I have had a HF one for years on my shopvac. Really handing when running the milling machine. Keep the nozzle at the tool and the mess off the floor. I hate bending over to clean the floor.
Reply:I wish I had a belt sander for evening up diagonal cuts on square tubing.  I usually torch cut them, and I never seem to get the edges to match up perfectly.
Reply:I have a HF foot switch on my Milwaukee Porta Bandsaw with a SWAG stand which has been working for many years. The one thing I didn't like about the foot switch was where the cord came out (on the side). I took apart the foot switch and made the cord come out next to the plug outlet (much better now!).

[QUOTE]Lis, I noticed that you had a dentist's exam lamp up in the corner of your photo.  Do they use 110v or 220v?  If 110v, I might try to talk my dentist out of his if and when he replaces if.

I use it to square up cuts on ABS pipe too, you'd think it would load up the belt but it doesn't. It just wads up the plastic on the edges of the pipe into a hairball where you can clean it off with your thumb nail.
Reply:Thanks for the information, guys. It is really useful!

Reply:Where did you buy it?I have some of the cheap foot switches.  Canadian so maybe the same as HF, maybe not.Absolutely not a mercury switch. With the restrictions on mercury, you will never see them on new made equipment again. The foot switches are the stupid simple cheap and common as grass micro switches.
