Hi all, first post here. I do some basic fab stuff out of my garage and recently picked up a 60's Idealarc 250. I took it apart for a good cleaning since it looks like it was sitting in a barn for a while, and I'm having trouble with the amp adjustment. The 2 small gears for the dial move freely, but the shunt(rotor?) inside the reactor seems to be locked up tight. Loosening the rotor support screws and the front&back does not seem to have helped. Am I missing something here or do I just need to apply more muscle?

Reply:Well those have a close fit in the transformer core. I would suspect it’s bridged over with rust. I’ve never scene that but I guess it’s possible.  Try soaking with PB and slightly moving it back and forth. If you get it free the next trick is setting those tension bolts on each end of the rotor. If they aren’t tight enough when you strike the arc it will spin the adjustment wheel.
