When did Hobart Bros. go out of buisness?"after a long day of doing nothing...its gooood to kick back" Pumbaa
Reply:When they got bought by Indochina Tool Works, and Lincoln pitched a hissy fit.Hobart's engine drives and heavy machines got sold off to Thermodyne, and the MIG stuff was bought by ITW.I believe some of the history is on ITW's web site.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:I just became aware of a cv power source that the real Hobart Bros. used to make called the 'fabricator'300amps @ 60% maybe up to 400amp peak-all on single phase power But, since todays welding customer seems to have swallowed hook line and sinker the 'bells & whistles' speal, that current makers pimp- no such machine is being produced only electronic tinker toys. From the posts Rock used to put up over on the 'hobart' board this is one of the machines that Thermal Arc got in the 'deal'. Course, dont see such a beast listed for sale with that company only the electronic/high profit/junk...So, the knowledge to build a single phase 400amp traditional cv beast is there-figures I got into welding too late to get one new."after a long day of doing nothing...its gooood to kick back" Pumbaa
Reply:"Economics" and tax laws have pretty much eliminated the need to build machines that will run for 30 years today.  Add in inventory taxes, and MBA types, and you have the complete nightmare. When Foster Wheeler closed the Dansville plant, fine usable 30 year old TIG machines and stick machines that were producing till the day of closure went to the scrapper, because an MBA calculated they weren't worth auctioning.Fortunately, there are still a lot of good machines in the supply stream.Besides, everybody knows you don't want a 800 pound machine when a 60 pound machine will accomplish the same task, according to the book, and when the little machine throws a fit, you can replace it with the newer model with more computer power.  Manufacturers need to sell machines, so they can import more parts from China.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:Those old monsters are fine for someone with the space and the power to run them.  Franz has a couple and I have one. But I have a forklift and 400A servie too, and 6400 sq ft shop.www.urkafarms.com
