Was reading Tig Depot and came across a phrase I didnt know the meaning of.ER70S-3 produces quality welds on rimmed steels, better welds on semi-killed steels, and excellent welds on killed steels. Whats rimmed steel and what is "killed steel"?axehind
Reply:It has to do with how the original ingot of steel is poured and solidified.Rimmed steel is when the molten steel is poured in a standing mold without deoxidants. The ingot has impurities spread out through the interior with an outer skin almost pure iron. When rolled it makes for a good sheet stock.Semi-killed is when some doxidizers are added to the pour and killed is when a full amount of oxidizers are added and the pipe at the top is cut off.Structural is killed or semi-killed.I have never had the occasion to differentiate the categories and have no idea how one would "test" a sample to see what it was. |
