vertical fillet

I've only been welding a few months.  I got a test coming up which involves welding a vertical fillet with a 1/8 6010 rod going uphill for the first pass.  Then 3/32 7018 for the fill and cap.  Everytime I weld the 6010 the arc doesn't want to stay in the corner of the coupon.  It always bounces from one side to the other leaving parts of it with no fusion at all.  It's a 90 degree angle and I know I should keep the rod at a 45 degree angle but it just doesn't want to stay in the corner.  Any tips?
Reply:Sounds like a bit of arc blow.  Slightly reduce your amperage, hold a tighter arc, and move your ground to the top end of your test piece.  Any , all or none of these measures can work.

Reply:I agree wit this, tack it well on both ends and turn the heat up, 90A at least, make sure you are on DCRPwww.urkafarms.com
Reply:Put your ground clamp at the top and keep a tight arc gap.85 to 90 amps is good and get in a position to really see what is going on.keep the rod tight in the corner and watch the weld puddle .keep your travel speed at a steady pace.after you get your 6010 pass in like it should be,turn your heat down about 5 amps for thr 7018.with your test piece allready hot from the first pass you will only need about 80 amps for the 3/32 7018s.this will help out with undercut on the edges.good luck
Reply:ALSO use DC electrode positive current.99% of stick welding is done on this polarity.
Reply:Thanks for the input guys.  The test is the first year apprenticeship exam in Canada and it's pretty hectic.  I got everything down very nicely exept that vertical fillet.
Reply:Sometimes you can rotate your stinger side to side while putting your bead in and it will help with the rod burning on one side or the other.
