new welder,hook up to generator?

hi, i just bought a new welder off e-bay. it's about a 200 amp. and didn't come with a plug. went down to the local hardware store, and was tryin to think of the best plug outfit for it. it can either be 110 or 240. I may be a wiz at lawncare, but electricity isn't one of my strongest points. i got to in hope i could have it portable for field work, wanted to use my 5000 watt generator to power it. this evening i hooked up the ac arc welder by using a 20 amp, 250v plug and hooked into the 240 side of the 5000 watt generator. alli was getting was chicken scratch and nothing much more. called it a night after 10 minutes of that. what amperage of plug should i use?  is a 5000 watt generator powerful enough to do the job?  any help would really be appreciative..
Reply:Do you have a make and model for this machine?  What type is it, stick or mig? There should be a diagram in the OM for it.www.urkafarms.com

Reply:If it's and 'either' / 'or' type machine it is vry likely there are straps inside that need changed for conversion back and forth.
