i want to make a custom snowmobile chassiswould one of these welders be good enough to use??http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=55167  orhttp://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=44567
Reply:is a snomobile chassis steel? i honestly don't know, i'm as far away from snow as you can get, lol.  both of those are the same machine, the 1st one is a reconditioned 2nd model... Also, all you can use those machines on is steel. For about $300 you can pickup a hobart hh125 machine that will serve you much better and have a better weld quality.StangnetShop Full Of Stuff. Joey
Reply:Steel only?? These machines will do very light steel and that's it. I guess you build some sort of light sub structure then the bulk of the body would be aluminum? My limited experience with snowmobiles is that there is a lot of flexing going on. The most popular flux cores aren't real condusive to a lot of flexing and these machines are flux only, so unless you know your flux cores pretty well you won't be a happy camper. When I hear custom I think a person must want quality. So couple a very low end machine with a first time project and the chances of you being satisfied are dang slim.
Reply:Dont use flux welders for somthing like that ..i wouldnt even buy a harbor freight.. but if i had too id get this http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=6271
Reply:Go for a more name brand like Lincoln, Miller, or HTP.  Better quality, availability of consumables, replacement parts, and customer service.  The Hobart is okay too, just a made over Miller using less expensive materials, thus, the lesser price.A few of my toys !LinuxMintManjaroMiller Roughneck 2E Lincoln WeldPak 100HTP MTS 160 Chicago Electric 80amp Inverter   Victor O/A
Reply:well i should have been more discriptive on what i want to do, i speed run snowmobiles(go as fast as you can in 1000') and at one of the races i saw a top fuel dragster and went to check it out and when i got over there i saw a snowmobile engine and snowmobile tracks as drive, i want to make a small version of that using steel
Reply:we also dont have 220 and dont want to pay someone $400 to put it in
