Question: I have 4 steel posts that I may want to use. They are basically 4" pipe that tapers to around 3" @ 16" long.So I'm wanting to use them as posts for either a car port or patio cover.I just can figure a way to plumb them out once in place. Well I got an idea: If I square the 4 posts at the top and square them at the bottom they should be plumb...I guess.Maybe there is a smarter more accurate way to do it?
Reply:I am not sure about the shape of the pipe.  I read it as a full length pipe long enough to support a carport roof.  The main diameter is 4 inch and the last 16 inches tapers to 3 inches.   If that is the case you can simply put a spirit level on the side of the straight part of the post to plumb it.Another way would to use plumb lines.   Tack bits of one inch flat bar to the top end at ninety degrees to each other.  Erect the pole then hanger a plumb bob from each piece of scrap.  You can see if you are plumb then for the final check measure with your tape the space between pole and string low and high. You can buy fence post levels pretty cheap at building supply dealers.  Some even have magnets while others use elastic bands to hold it on the pole.Cross measure at the bottom and the top to make sure your four posts are square
Reply:well the 90 angle idea is good.Oh I know what these are, they are pipe use for light poles. So they are bigger in diameter at one end than they other.
