Welding abc's

I recently bought a Hobart mig 135 and have gotten pretty good at it.  I also bought a new Oxy Acetaline, I only use the oxy ac for heating things and cutting, but I know you can also weld. But I would really like to know the difference between Mig,Tig, Arc, stick, and Oxy acetaline. What is used for what, which is stronger, which is cleaner.  Im so confused

Reply:Tig is a heat source where you add filler and so is gas weldingMig is where wire is fed through the liner.Arc is stick welding it is an electrode with a coated flux covering which burns up as the material deposits onto metal, in this process the slag covers and or shields the puddle to prevent contamination, this must be chipped off.Brazing is heating both parts after you applied flux at about 1200 degrees you add rod and it will melt all around.Sub-merged arc is a sand flux used to protect the metal being deposited, in this process no helmet is needed although darker safety glasses are worn alot.There are so many types of metal and welding processes to learn that as Franz said do a little search and you will find out more.Last edited by Jerry; 01-26-2004 at 03:05 PM.J P Streets Welding LLC

Reply:I used to weld years ago in a tool and die job shop. I welded mig and tig . too many  years ago for me to know the answer to this question: I intend on building a guard rail for an upstairs (2nd story ) balcony.
