Or, more correctly, how do I prevent it?I bought a large roll and dont want to lose it to rust.I've read that a liberal dousing with WD40 works.Any thoughts??Currently I have the welder in the house, it'llprobably stay in but when I work away from homeit might have to live in a barn for a while.ThanksGordon.
Reply:I'm not a big fan of the WD40 idea. I've heard it too. Seems like you bust your but cleaning a chunk of iron and making sure there isn't any oil on it then spray it with crap. Putting WD40 on the wire sounds about like the same concept. In the past I've snuck out of the house with a tupperware container or two that just happened to be the right size for 2 and 10 pound rolls of wire. A packet of desiccant and you're good to go.  Round ones if possible. Blame the neighbors dog for packing them off.  Luckily I happened onto a small steel convection equipement cabinet a while back. Put in a shelf, heat deflection shield and wired it with a ceramic socket for an appliance light and a toggle switch. Turn it on when I leave the shop at night. Little 20 watt job. so it doesn't hurt if you leave it on for extended periods.
Reply:My dads pipeline construction company kept open containers of rod in an old fridg with a 100 watt bulb on 100% of the time.
Reply:wd40 would seem the wrong thing to do.  Seems like that would contaminate the weld just as bad as a greasy piece of metal would.I think that tupperware idea is a good one.  I had been keeping my 1 and 2 pound rolls in an old airtight lunchbox with a couple of dessicant packs.  I just never considered a bigger airtight container for the larger rolls.  Good dessicant source:When I am out shopping with the wife, I often end up in shoe stores for HOURS (or at least it seems that long).  I have noticed that the clerks dont mind at all if you pick up packs of dessicant off the floor and keep them.  Most just look at you funny and smile, like they think you are going to eat it.  I have seen dozens of packs in their trash cans.  All shoe boxes have the little packets in them.  That turns a week at the shoe store into at least a little productive time....after a few hours of saying "yeah...those look great, buy them and let's go to sears and browse the hand tool section," I generally score a dozen or more packs easy.  And, they can be heated and reused!!!If you can manage to abduct a couple of containers from the kitchen and several packs of dessicant from a local shoe store, you in bid'ness.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Gentlemen, I thank you.  Tupperware and dessicant it will be.  I wasn't too impressed by the WD40 idea either but I knew that a post here would solve my problem.  Not that my rust potential in California is anything like what some of you have to put up with.
