I posted this in the cutting section, but got no replys. Thought it would get more views here:I think I need to invest in a cutting torch, guages, tanks, etc. The sawzall is great for lighter metals, but I'm looking at a few projects that will involve 3/8 steel and thicker. My question... since this is a hobby for me, and I might only do some cutting 2 or 3 times a year, I don't want to put a lot of money in an outfit. Can anyone advise me of the least expensive way to go? I have looked at a Lincoln (or maybe it was a Victor) torch/guage combination that SAM'S sells for around $140, but don't know if it is adequate. Also any ballpark figures on tank cost, etc.? Just trying to pick knowledge from everyone before I go any further. Thanks in advance for any help.
Reply:check out Northern Tool for a small, hand-portable rig that is sometimes called a "safe cracker's torch." you can buy the whole setup, torch, regulators, tanks and a carrier for less than $300.00.
Reply:Thanks for the reply... I was beginning to feel ignored... lol. I actually have made a decision already. I am getting a Victor Super Range II outfit shipped to my door for $172 (gotta love online shopping!).My local welding supply shop is selling me a 90ft oxygen tank filled for $144 (I own it at that point), and I'm still thinking about what fuel I want to use. They are suggesting chemolene in place of acetylene, since all I am interested in is cutting. Whatever I choose, their tank prices are as good as I've seen in my shopping around.
Reply:Straight propane is cheap. You can use a 20 lb. tank like the ones used for bbq grills. About $12 to refill. You must have a propane cutting tip. Blue Rhino brand tanks used to not be refillable, thus stay away from them. I don't know if they are refillable now. Tank exchange was +$20. |
