I'm about to pull the trigger on purchasing a pair of matching welding gas cylinders for MIG welding.   Of the choices in the 55 to 60 cubic foot range, I can select 55 cf cylinders with a threaded collar to screw a protective cap onto, or 60 cf cylinders that look like a scuba tank with no provisions for a protective cap.   Is one design better than the other?    I understand the benefit for having the protective cap, but the "scuba tank" ones are 5cf larger and cost $5 less each.Any advice? There are no small projects
Reply:cap is good for transportation....i knnow for me hauling the oxy ace bottles required by law to have capsIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:How about an 80CF bottle?  They're not that large and they have caps.-Heath
Reply:Well, if they actually look like a scuba tank, then no, because that's a J-Valve, and it will be hard to find a place that will fill those.  Then with your regulator you will always need a DIN adaptor.  (And a SCUBA is 80 cubic feet.  )Edit: well that depends on where you are, sometimes SCUBA uses DIN, but usually J. Reply:How much and form which seller?
Reply:I paid $144.87 each with free shipping from Indiana Oxygen Co.    The cylinders are new and hydro-tested.     Their Ebay ID is weldingsuppliesatioc.     I don't know if this was the best price for 80cf cylinders, (so I don't want to hear about how bad I just got ripped), but I do know that price was 20% less than purchasing two new cylinders locally. There are no small projects
Reply:You'll be happy with that size and will save enough money in the first few refills to cover the added cost of the larger size.  Indiana Ox has pretty good prices.  You probably wouldn't have gotten a substantially better price without buying used tanks...and, that carries a risk in itself.  Happy miggin'.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Yeah , I agree. Sounds like a good deal. Just make sure when you get them filled that they fill yours and don't give you some used tanks on trade. Some places do this instead of filling your tanks. Just a word of caution. It happened to me, but I was ok with it because the expiration date on the tank they gave me was further away than the tank I had.
Reply:The place I go to fills the cylinders while I wait so exchanging them isn't a concern.   Thanks for all your input. There are no small projects
