First off, happy Thanksgiving everyone.I have a lincoln ranger 250 with trailer also a lincoln 225 wirematic (mig)I have just purchased the required tig options for my ranger for scratch start, No high frequency unit.I would like to know what my limitations are going to be with this setup.I am a Sheetmetal worker and I build 3 or 4 custom bikes a year all with steel, I would like to start using aluminum hence the tig purchase, also I do a lot of metal fence fabbing and repair, I have left the aluminum alone and would like to be able start working with it,I do not like the quality of my welding with a spool gun and to load up the wirematic is a pain for outside work. Thanks in advance for your help.
Reply:To weld aluminum you are going to need a continuous high frequency unit and weld in AC current.
Reply:You will also have to sit down with a seasoned TIG welder to learn our secrets
Reply:Two ways to weld aluminum on tig dc. With dc neg. electrod sharp point use only helium scratch start if you don't have hf start.  you will get instant puddle.  With reverse polarity, use only argon, lots of cleaning action little penetration, good chance of blowing your tungsten on higher amperages.  Good for thin aluminum.  A larger tungsten may be necessary.  I have done this using a hobart gasoline welder.
Reply:Thjats interesting riley, I'll have to give it a try myself.Stephen
