Just wondering if anyone currently calibrates their own flow meters.  We are looking into doing this in-house rather than using an outside source.  I know that to do the welding machines I can get a bank from Miller so somewhere out there I know there is something used to calibrate flow meters. So far all of my quick searches just pull up establishments that do the actual testing. Any suggestions?
Reply:One would use a flowmeter to calibrate another flowmeter.  Ideally, you could rent or buy one that's already been calibrated and is NIST traceable.  That is assuming that you need that kind of precision.  Do you need that kind of precision?-Heath
Reply:Thanks for the reply.  Yes we have to make sure that everything is in cal and traceable here as we do Navy, Land system and Aerospace work.  We normally have someone come out and do the calibration on all of our equipment (around 40 welding machines and about 100 flow meters) and thought it would pay for itself to do it in-house.  I haven't ever dealt with calibration myself but didn't think it would that hard to do.
Reply:For the purposes of your own edification, it would be possible to use a calibrated flowmeter as a standard against which to check other flowmeters.  However, if you must have NIST traceable flow meters, then there is a specific procedure that must be followed.  I doubt that it is something that could be easily or cheaply done.-Heath
Reply:You might check a motorcycle repair shop. They use flowmeters for carb work.
