Found this today. It's a really simply written, clearly illustrated manual for stick welding. The diagrams are particularly clear.Perfect for amateurs - like me - who don't have the luxury of being able to sit at the feet of a 'saeoned welder'.It's only 30 pages or so and there are some simple projects at the end. Some of the stuff e.g. when they talk about power, will only be relevant to Australia. Lots of it, though, is very generic.http://www.aussieweld.com.au/arcwelding/index.htmScott

Reply:Yes, free is good.Strange that they did it. When I tried to open it I was sure they'd ask me for a payment. It printed fine, too.I'm assuming they got it from someone else and bunged it on their site. They wouldn't be a big campany. They're in a town called Port Macquarie. It's about 4.5 hours drive north of Sydney. A seaside town with a pop of around 60,000 people. I've got a holiday apartment up there, so next time I'm in town I'll drop in on them, thank them for posting the manual on their site, and buy something.Scott
Reply:Dang, this thing is written in Austrailian!!!  Thanks...I always like getting good reference material.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Yes, it's pretty blunt and to the point i.e. Australian. I bet it's possible to by a book ten times as long as it that covers about the same amount of stuff.I wonder how universal welding is. I presume there are some techniques and practices that are local? With the stuff in this manual, the advice I've got from you guys and the sample rods that welder.man is sending me, I'm running out of excuses. My welding had better start improving.Scott
Reply:That was a good read, thanks. I saved it for reff. I liked that post puller under the projects section. I made one similar to that for the metal T posts.
Reply:Scott,The Australian comment was part of an inside joke (on me), referring to my proficiency in english.  I am a southerner and english is thought of as only a suggested way to speak.  Sorry for the bad joke and for the mispellings.By the way, I didnt realize that the welding rods in AU all are listed with different names.  I would guess this would make things harder for you, reading about the "correct" US rods to use and then having to find the equal AU rod.  I guess I thought the standards for naming were international...I guess not.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I knew you guys talked funny, I didn't know you read funny.I suspect we get a mixture or labelling on our rods. Some would have a local numbering and some would be identical to yours e.g. it's certainly possible to 6013 etc. Then of course there are the Chinese ones that aren't relabelled where everything is written in Chinese and you're never exactly sure what you're getting.Scott
Reply:My accent is considered "talking funny" even in my own state.  Standard English to me is almost a second language.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
