I have decided to learn how to weld mainly out of curiosity and need to fabricate exhaust parts for my car which i am currently building. what i need to know is since i will be welding steel exhaust parts what kind of welder would be the best for me? i am a beginner so i would likely want somthing easy to learn on but capable enough to do the job. i have an old stick welder kicking around but it looks like the housing on the grounding clamp is peeling in one place. would this be fixable and would this be somthing i could possibly use? ofcourse i would need some assistance setting up and making sure i don't hurt myself since i have never welded before. thanks for any help you guys can offer.
Reply:if your going to do exhaust then a stick welder is NOT what you need plain and simpleyou need a good GAS mig welder..(or a tig if you want to do headers and such)forget a flux core mig for exhaust pipes alsothey are good for the broken exhaust clamp or hanger or something with real beefy metal but they just dont cut it with exhaust tubing...and thats the way it is in 2006 ...zap!
Reply:what am i looking to invest with a tig? lincolon miller? those what i should be lookin at?
Reply:Look at the Thermal arc TA-185.  About 2k with the argon bottle.  Great little welder and about the best bang for the buck deal there is.  Next step down is an Econotig or Tigmate.  On the bottom is the HF Chicom junque that isn't really worth considering.Last edited by Tailshaft56; 03-02-2006 at 12:37 AM.DennisThermal Arc 185-TSWMillermatic Challenger 172VictorO/AAtlas Craftsman 12 by 24 LatheEsab PCM-875Wholesalem Tool Mill-Drill
