I recently got certified on stick and mig but I'd like to add pipe to my resume.I have never tried it. From what i was told you use a 1/8 6010 for the root and a 7018 to fill it up. is there any templates anywhere of the test pipes and also is there any basic pipe welding manuals online? thanks in advance.
Reply:As a first suggestion, try using the new search function at the far-right upper corner of the WeldingWeb home page. It's a vertical search tool: it's powered by Google, but eliminates anything that ISN'T welding related. I did a quickie search for pipe welding manual and got back results that seemed relevant for you. Let me know if it works for you.Bob RosenbaumFormer PublisherPenton's WELDING Magazine
Reply:ok thanks...also does anyone have any basic setting for a 6g test for 6010 and 7018 in the 1/8 flavour? Is it best to use a weave technique or stringers when starting out
Reply:First off, I would suggest that you get a copy of the Lincoln book on welding. It has all the information that you will need about the different tests on plate and pipe. This book can be purchased at most welding supply shops and some larger book stores.Study the book then practice, practice and then practice some more. I've been welding pipe for 30 years and there are quite a few tricks that you will learn with experience and lots of practice. Enroll in a pipe welding class. This will be the easiest and most productive way to learn pipe welding. When welding in the 6G position, you NEVER make weave or lace welds, ALWAYS STRINGERS. More than likely if you were to make a weave or lace filler or cap weld, the inspector would bust you out on the test.Do hope this information has helped.
Reply:Hi DiverbillI love your signature, it's a little ripper Stephen
Reply:ok thanks, even the cap is done with stringers?
Reply:is there a template of the testing procedures?is there any starts and stops?I know nothing about pipe.I was told i have to get my tssa high pressure pipe here in canada!
Reply:If there is one thing i've learned about pipe-welding it's that everybody has there own way of doing it and the best thing you can do is practice.  I've only been welding for six months and can pass a visual and bend test on a 6g so if you've already been certified on plate than i don't think you'll have many problems.  About the start/stops, if you are welding on a bigger diameter pipe try to avoid making your tie-ins in the same place as it'll look nasty and possibly affect the weld.  Get the info on any specifications regarding your certification and keep them in mind while you practice.Good luck, pipe is a whole other animal...Noel
