I need to build up track rollers for my dozer.  what is the best rod for this application, metal to metal wear with some pressure.  I have a mig welder also but the biggest wire I can handle is .035.  but if there is a good wire for this purpose I prefrer to use the mig.
Reply:7018 topped with a hard facing rod?
Reply:WOULDN T STICK be better ??? but  its been a while .all i do is tig now but we use to  use stick when i worked on heavy equip.  it was on the service trucks
Reply:You need to remove the internals first, preheat and buildup with a low-hydrogen process.  Gas Metal Arc Welding and Flux core are both low hydrogen.  Finish with a hard surface rod recommended by a welding supplier in your area.  .035 is too small a wire for this job.
Reply:7018 is also low-hydrogen.  He asked what the best rod was but said he ALSO had a MIG welder in case that was acceptable.  Obviously it isn't, so let's get back to talking rods.
Reply:Many people do not realize that there are other welding processes that produce a weld with minimal trapped hydrogen other than the use of E 7018 or E 7028.  CASE could use hard wire to build up if he had a machine capable of welding with .045 or larger wire.  In fact he could likely purchase a surfacing wire also.
Reply:What model mig welder do you have? If the 35 wire is the largest it can handle, I figure you have a 110 or smaller 220V unit. You can bulid up it up with a solid gas wire or even a with self shielding wire and cover the build up with  a min two pass of a hardfacing wire, you must run a multiple pass cause of dilution. There is numerous mfg websites you can visit with recommendation on different metal to metal wear consumables, Lincoln Electric is agood one.

Reply:Zapster hit it on the head. If you put Hardfacing on the rollers it's not an easy job to get them back round. I've refurbished several size dozers before, and it was cheaper to buy the idlers and rebuild the drives. And if the Idlers are worn, maybe the Trunions and caps need some attention also. If you do decide to build up, Like Zapster said, use some 70,80.or9018. Good Luck, its a time consumming process, and heavy work.If it's HOT, Don't touch it
Reply:Rollers and Idlers do not require machining if welded properly.  It is an acquired skill that I don't have.  In the 1960's I worked in a Caterpillar dealership and they rebuilt complete undercarriages.  Rollers and idlers were welded using submerged arc which is the proper way.  No machining was required.  Considering the arrangement of bearings and seals internally I would not even attempt a field rebuild.  I would simply purchase exchange rebuilt components.  I am dating myself here.  The sub arc machine had radio tubes in the control circuits!!!!   In the Eighties I worked in a shop where a crawler tractor owner brought in his rollers and idlers.  The seals had failed and the machine had been run until the bearings were ground to scrap metal.  A few weeks before he had a guy on a mobile truck rebuild the rolling components while they were on the machine.  I suspect that the full amperage was run through the bearings.   We patched up the units as best we could but they failed again and he had to purchase factory rebuilt components.   Repairing heavy equipment properly is a skill that many profess to have but few possess.
