Man, all I wanted was a couple of sheets of 3'x3' 11 gauge and 3/16"that's total 6' square, and it cost me $79.00- and that was $60.00 cheaper than the next closest price!!!How much are you guys paying for metal sheets?I'm sure it varies a lot, but I'm concerned that I'm being taken advantage of for not knowing the business very well. thanksSky
Reply:I haven't bought sheet but had to price some a while back, and a 4x4 sheet of .100 was 80 bucks. Seemed high to me.Bill
Reply:I think the total square feet is 18. It sure seems high to me too. I guess that is why I scrounge steel.David
Reply:The price of sheet metal (and other metals) has gone uip dramatically in the past 6 months. It's the world situation, China and the price of fuel. It's going to get worse, too.
Reply:First- multiplication lesson- 3 feet by 3 feet is 9 square feet.2 pieces- which is what I thought you bought- one of 3/16", and one of 11 ga, is 18 sq ft.Steel is a commodity, and if you buy much at all, you are paying a straight per pound price for the steel. It varies weekly, or even daily, but lately it has been running around 80 cents a pound, and up, for mild steel new around here. Different shapes cost a different amount per pound, and the prices can change at any time. The more you buy, the cheaper per pound price you get. Your 3x3 of 3/16" ought to have weighed 7.66lbs/sq.ft, for a total of 69lbs, times 80 cents would be 55 bucks. 11 ga is 5lbs per sq ft., or 45lbs for a 3x3.x .80 is 36 bucks.Add to that a cut charge, which is if you dont buy a whole sheet- usually a whole sheet is 4x8 or 4x10 feet. Cutting charges can be as cheap as 5 bucks, or as much as 25.So if you got both pieces for 79 bucks, you got a good deal. If they were 79 bucks each, well, thats different. But buying 3x3's, you are kind of a nuisance customer to most steelyards- they like to sell by the truckload.Did you ask if they had drops- pieces left over from cutting other peoples stuff? Sometimes you dont pay a cutting charge for their scraps, and a steelyards scraps can still be pretty big.
