all right. i have got my boat lift ready for painting. I am going tonight to buy a paint gun, and some paint. any suggestions on a good gun for under 100 bucks. gravity feed or syphon? what about paints. thanks a lot
Reply:instead of the cost of paint..that probably wont stay long.. and the cost of all the equipment..why not send them out for "hot dip" galvy?last a long time and dont get all rusty/crappy..just what i would do......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Though I haven't used it yet, the gun I bought it supposed to be good for the money, it is a DeVILBISS FinishLine 3 HVLP with a 1.5 tip.Shipped off e-bay it was about $125I hear the Harbor Freight HVLP guns are great for the money, $60 ish.
Reply:If this is supposed to go into the water, galvanizing is the best route.  Otherwise, it will begin to rust quickly and soon the paint will be gone...for most metal (steel) stuff that's around water or in water, you need a sacrificial metal from which the main metal can rob electrons.  The zinc in the galvanized coating provides the necessary electrons to delay oxidation.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Going into the water, even zinc will only provide limited protection.  It will last as long as the galvanic cell sacrifices the available zinc.  Once the zinc is gone, rust begins.  Not sure where you live, but is there a powder coat house nearby.  I'd do a zinc coat followed by powder coat.  Out here in the desert, powder coating is getting cheaper than painting.I r 2 a perfessional
Reply:If you are interested in boating and associated hardware there are two good sites I've come across.    One is www.boatdesign.net the other is the yahoo site on origami boat building.   The Origami site is especially interesting in that they make large sailboats out of sheet metal.    Lots of welding there!!!!!!!!     Actually the origami site is what got me interested in welding again after a number of years. In any event the yahoo groups daily mails have recently been discussing galvanized steel and the various approaches to priming and painting.    Lots of practical experience there with respect to corrosion and coatings.     In the end I have to agree with the galvanizing approach possibly coupled with concrete piers for the frame.    After galvanizing look for a suitable primer and top coat that is speced for galvanized steel.Dave
