a fella calls me today wanting to know if i can weld up some hastalloy pipe for him. "hmmmmmmm, well, never have before, but let me check with some people (that being ya'll reading this) and i'll give ya a call in the morning.i have never welded this, just went through my lincoln rod book and didn't really see anything on this. the pipe is sch 80 2in i believe he said. so what do i need to weld this? i assume a good ole 7018 ain't gonna cut. heli-arc, mig, any suggestions. i know there are some other pipefitters on hers who weld this stuff all the time."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:it looks like an nickel alloy so tig it and you'll need to witch one of the 20 grade's it isLast edited by chopper5; 09-08-2006 at 08:33 PM.ChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:I weld it quite often, it is a common alloy used in the aviation industry, usually used in parts that are subjected to high heat . Yes it is nickel based, it welds somewhat on  the dirty side. I have welded it in sheet form , and tubing form (I have never seen it in 2" schedule 80 pipe) and I have only tig welded it, I believe there is also a mig wire for it, there are a couple different grades of Hastelloy so make sure you match the filler wire to the correct base metal and use a argon purge.
Reply:guess i'll call the fella and tell him i'll provide the t & e and let him provide the consumables. elder, you may be right about it being tubing. we were talking about 4 different sizes of pipe and i was trying to hold the phone and weld at the same time. these are high heat lines used in some kind of boiler or something he is working on."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it

Reply:t&e = time and energy where I'm from. I welded some hastelloy X once for a pickling bath job, it was sheet and sch 10 tube at CEBAF. Not terrible to work with, but damned expensive to kill. @ $90/lb at the time.Weldtek
Reply:I weld a lot of the stuff.  Aviation stuff like Elder.  Also did some pipe.  It has a higher resistance to abrasion so is used for brine and slurry lines where steel, or even stainless steel, would wear through.Welds like mud.  Susceptible to cold-cracking (but not as bad as inconel).  You'll need to know what alloy the pipe is, but odds are good that hastelloy W (aka Turballoy W) rod will work.  Heck, that stuff works great on just about everything.  Make sure though.  You can weld X with W, but you should go with the most appropriate rod.Definitely TIG welded, with backup gas.  If they are x-raying and you've done a lot of stainless pipe to x-ray then you'll be fine.  If not, I'd try to get a bit and try a couple practice joints to familliarize yourself with how it runs.KalroyKalroy"It's all about the OODA Loop."
Reply:turned out to be hastelloy c-22, yeah, try to find that filler rod on a saturday. oh well, have to work him in next week. elder, it is pipe, couldn't imagine him paying for this pipe to use on a garage boiler/ heater system. seems an expensive way to make a heater. i just weld, not question the engineering abilities of who i'm welding for."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it

Reply:elder, job is done. sorry no pics, my camera was in the service truck that was stolen and still fighting the insurance company on. he had built a fire box 4'x5'x4'. the pipe comes into the side of the box and warms and then goes to a regular car radiator with fans on it to warm the shop. the was 3 progressivly longer pipes stacked on top of each other and at an angle. he sais it will work. tig'd it, looks good."Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun  Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:Where are you located? I know of one man(my welding God) who can weld it to code. He will fly to do it but will charge accordingly.
