Reply:?  You'll be doing multi-pass welds on this thickness so you could weld it with a buzz box.
Reply:No offense bud but if you have to go on an internet forum to ask what machine to use, you have no business welding on a 50 ton lowboy. Or anything else that effects life and limb of innocent people.Failure can result in your insurance company shelling out millions of $$$$, plus jail time. JTMcC.
Reply:A carfull self evaluation of your welding abilites might be the place to start .

Reply:Wasn't really the warmest welcome I've seen. Folks don't always do a perfect job of detailing their request in their initial post. A carefull reading of his question looks as tho his real question may have been the 100 amp shop service versus input requirements for an appropriately sized welder for 1/2" material. In that case I could only guess that you might be talking a 250 to 350 amp machine for a constant diet of this type of repair. If that's the case 100 amp service just might be a little light considering other devices might be up and running at the same time. An engine drive could be a better choice then.Who knows.
Reply:No HOITY TOITY guy here. You gave a brand name of a welder & asked if it would work for the project No amp rating no mention of whether its ac-dc 3 phase, single phase no mention of the service phase.Seems you should know what your own machine is capable of doing or what juice its meant to be plugged into. Have you used this welder before ? A 100 amp service even if its single phase will give plenty of power to use an inverter welder at half the cost of diesel welder.Last edited by lars66; 10-15-2006 at 02:10 PM.

Reply:Maybe I'm missing something in JJs post But I'm with the others asking if you want to know which welder ...you shouldn't be considering a job of that scale and consequences.>>>what in this post makes you think i was asking how to weld or have no knowledge of welding maybe no knowledge of wiring... i have rebuilt 2 rogers bros lowbeds in the past 1 50 ton and 1 75 ton dropside which both go through regular dot checks and never get puled out of service for equipment...Well why would the third require a different welder?
