Has anyone had the oppurtunity or the aggravation of trying to weld a crack in a cast aluminum engine block. I've tried several aluminum fillers, seems to be that the block might have alot of magnesium in it along with aluminum. I am trying the HTS-2000 brazing rod now and it seems to work well with the tig process. Would anyone know for sure what the composition of the cast aluminum block is made of for sure. Is it possibly 319,355,356 or could it be some other composition. Still some oil seepage under the washed in edge of weld.
Reply:iI could'nt tell you what its made of..did you try 5356 filler?welding a casting is tough..i'll agreethe oil thats seeping out must be eliminated in order to seal it up correctly..regrind the weld and do it over and over and over untill the oil trail is gone..grind..wipe good with acetone..weldrepeat process as needed untill you get a nice clean weld......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
