I have searched and read the previous post about mig welding up(I've been a lerker for about 4 months now with no post). I have always welded downward on vertical joints, I can control it without it drooping, its the way I was tought. I mainly weld on heavy equipment(usually nothing structural), dozers, backhoes, etc.How do you weld upward? Everytime I do it, it ends up gooping and droping(dont know how better to describe it). What are the pro's and con's of both ways.
Reply:In vertical up your root pass is done in a "Christmas tree" shape ie up for about 8-10 mm then down and across to one side then the other. Then up again. Its a triangular motion with the upper point of the triangle slightly elongated. The capping pass is a weave from side to side , into the edge of your root run and you kind of count 1,2,3 flick to other side 1,2,3 .You feel like your welding forever and not going anywhere but don't rush it.Try not to get your capping run run too ropey .This may be a clue..http://64.78.42.182/sweethaven/BldgC...Num=7&modNum=6Good luck and practice

Reply:Hey Brett, checked out that link and backtracked it, awesome site. Couldn't navigate back to the welding page from the main "Free-Ed" page. How did you get there? If you don't have the time to do it right, then you definitely don't have the time to do it over.
