There have been several questions asked about the minimun amps required to arc gouge, heres mine. I have a ranger 10000. 210 max dc amps. the owners manual claims that it can use 1/8, 5/32, and 3/16 carbons.http://content.lincolnelectric.com//...r/im/IM819.pdfAre these carbons, at these settings, large enough to do usefull work such as remove single pass welds done with 1/8 and 5/32 electrodes? I have plenty of air to supply the smaller air arc torches.
Reply:you could getby using 1/8 carbon, but I would not recomend larger. It would be very hard on machine, especily the govner, unless you are an experinced gouger.james stubblefield
Reply:The small carbons are handy to have when you get close to being deep enough to expose the joint.... depending on the application I may use the big carbons and work my way down to using the small or I may just use the small one. 1/4"... and on occasion 3/16" is the smallest I run, but I use both flat and round rods.I should add that the power source I use is a monster and it can handle the rods..... it does beat up your machine. On another note..... I had an older engine drive that I would use for gouging in the feild only (in addition to my other machines already on the truck) and if the rod was large enough you'd hear the RPMs of the machine drop and drop and drop, you'd think the machine was going to stall.Last edited by lorenzo; 01-01-2007 at 05:54 PM._________________Chris |
