A newbe here love what I have seen of your site. Asking a facrication question really, Im building a set of folding ramps for my landscape trailer, Steel should be her soon. Anyone ever seen a chart of the streinght of different gages of box and rectangular steel?I have been fabricating for about 8 years now and have had a lot of fun and success. To buy a set of ramps like i building would coust me over a grand. In my past projects I have have had a tendency to over build. I dont wont to short these reamps or add to much extra weight to the trailer. What i have for a trailer is a 16' tandem axel. And i plan to make a back ramp 6'4" wide X6" long folding unit. And also a 5" virsion for the side. I siad steel here soon, well i have a great local suppler of new steel here in centeral Illinois. I ordere 120' of 1" X 2" 14 gage steel yesterday. I guess it will all depend on who many cross beams i put into the deck in its bending capacity. the triler will gross a 5000# load. I might put a car on it some day but for the most part i will be loading a 1000# Dixie Chopper mower. Because Im loading mostly short wheel base ridering type mower I will need at least 6' long ramp so not to hang it up when loading, But a 6' long ramp is about 7 to 8" high when standing you on the trailer. So i am going to make the ramp fold in the middle. Plus a spring assist. Any one have any experence with a build of this type? Any sugestion? Thanks you all in advance.Dan H
Reply:Try this link. About the 10th file down on the list or so. Free PDF. Lots of charts. http://www.steeltubeinstitute.org/literature.htm
Reply:Thanks Sandy that was exatly what I needed. Plus your link added me to find a internet search asking a very similer question. The guy was building a table with 1x2 steel just as I am using. But tuthfully all those number make my head throb. The long andshort of it all, it confermed to me that Im right at the limits of bending or beflection. But not considering I will have a 1/2 cold rolled steel hing the length of the ramp.Silly this is the kind of thing that keeps a novice builder like me up at night. So this morning I called the Iron shop and asked if I could get one peace of 10 gage for the center of the ramp. Thanks again..PS I have to worn you all that my typing and spelling plus the use of the wrong word completly is aufull. I know it and Im sorry I dont run my post through a spell checker and hope I dont looks like a complete dumby. If you dont understand what Im trying to say please ask.Dan H
