I'm getting ready to test (AWS D1.1) for MIG and some positions for Stick. How can I avoid excessive distortion on the passes if the instructor wont allow me to tack the piece to the table (I dont know if he will or not.) Would a root, 2 fillers and a cover pass be enough to be "just above flush?"Last edited by SrA_USAF; 01-17-2007 at 10:52 PM.
Reply:I see no one posted on this one, so not knowing the test you are referring to I'll ask how thick is the plate you will be testing? Also I'm not familiar with AWS D1.1 and is distortion a factor in a pass/fail for your test?If you don't have the time to do it right, then you definitely don't have the time to do it over.
Reply:I guess I was just a little anxious to know as much as I could. I went on Friday and tested. The 3/8 plate was already tacked together so we'll find out this week if they passed.
Reply:Let us know if you do. Good luck and hope you passedMiller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:Just got my results back and I passed on MIG (1G and 2g) Their was some slag on my root pass for the stick test that opened up when they did the root bend. So i'll have to re-try on stick. All in all im pretty happy with this. Very basic positions but at least I have SOMETHING to show for. Thanks for all the support thus far.
Reply:A quick word of advice, a sturdy scratch awl for cleaning out the slag followed up by a wire brush, inspect and repeat as necessary. They make a bevelled-wire brush where all the wire is angled towards the middle, great for getting into tight root passes. Available at the welding supply. Also a cheap $5 set of picks from Depot or welding supply are useful for getting the tight bits of slag out of the corners. If you don't have sufficient light bring your own, even if it's a mag light just to inspect with. I used a reflector lamp plugged into the machine I tested on. Good luck on the retest!
