Hi, Where can I find online information to determine welding information on creating socket welded joints? All I have been able to find is the minimum gap between the end of the pipe and the bottom of the socket. I would like to know if there is any prep required for the fillet, size of fillet, any preheat or procedures etc, and if the inside of the joint needs to be welded as well? The joint in question is for welding a 316 ss 2" schedule 80 pipe into a 300# socket weld flange.Any help on the matter is appreciated.Steve
Reply:mystick i'd bet american welding society would be able to answer your question, as for myself, fill the socket to the edge and make the weld as high as it is wide for proper fillet, is the flange a slip-on or a true socket? slip-on means you can slide it on the pipe with-out it stopping
Reply:At least you already have the most important piece of information you need. It is critical that the pipe not go all the way to the bottom of the socket. The weld needs to be sized for the pipe, because the pipe is usually thinner than the weld face on the socket. For example; if you are using sch. 40 pipe in a sch 80 fitting, the weld does not need to be any bigger than what is necessary for the sch 40 pipe. Is this a critical application? Like high pressure steam?
