Can any AC/DC arc welder be converted to tig?

Hi, I've noticed that every tig machine I've looked at also has the ability to stick weld. I'm wondering if the opposite is true? Is it simply a matter of getting the right torch and plugging it in? My situation is as follows: I want to be able to weld anything (alum, stainless, chromoly, etc.). I live in an apartment and have very limited electrical resources so I've been looking at gas drive welders. They're pricy so I've been looking for a used one. I don't really know whats going on inside these types of equipment so I don't know if it's just about getting the right attachments or what. I'm also thinking about just getting a generator and a welder seperately, so thats also an option. But it sure would be sweet to have a tig/mig/stick/plasma/generator all in one unit. Thanks
Reply:yes it should be able to do tig with modifactions, but no it will never be a plasma cutter.
Reply:i know from experience that that generator can DC tig..  AC we didn't try...For the most part, a stick machine can also tig.  Unless you figure a way to control the current, you're stuck to one setting.  With a TIG machine, you can control the heat.  There have been a few on this board that have a tig/plasma combo... not sure how they like itTo get TIG on a stick machine, you need a terminal/gas adapter, gas bottle, and regulator.
Reply:YES you can tig with the DC.  If you want to TIG AC (aluminum) you will need a hi frequincy box to start the arc.  I have done it for many years with my Lincoln G7.    Plasma?  No way.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Thanks for the info guys. I had my eye on a used gas drive arc welder but I think I'm just going to hold out for something already set up for tig. The plasma cutter question was kinda wishful thinking.
Reply:Surplus Center sells a 150 Amp rheostat.  http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.as...=2263&catname=What about wiring it somewhere between the output and the torch.  Would it function in a manner similar to a foot pedal on a TIG machine?
