I had the day off today so I decided to do some work on my welding cart. My gas bottle restraint needed to be redone as the first attempt was pretty sloppy. So I am welding away with my Lincoln 3200, nearly all welds are done flat in front of me. All is going well and I have a very consistent arc. Once I get my square piece done I begin to fit to the upright that I have welded to the back of the cart. I tack it on and then try some overhead welding to secure it to the upright. My arc just goes to crap. All I get is a bunch of popping and can see my electrode has a big molten ball. I get no cook and not a good sound. I go back to the bench and try on a flat piece and the arc is excellent. Back to the overhead weld and nothing but pop and crap for an arc. I adjusted my gas up and down and still no good. Tweaked the wire speed up and still no good. What gives??? Why would going to an overhead situation cause me problems????Thanks,BrentLincoln 3200HD MIGLincoln AC/DC 225 Stick
Reply:Sometimes, you have to kick up the speed a little to weld upside down. With my mig, I always carried the weld from the side, down under the part. And, When inverted, I try to keep the gun at an angle, so I am actually welding almost sideways. It works much better than true inverted.
Reply:Less volts or more wire speed. Turn the handle while you are welding if you have to. It will weld the same overhead as flat if you get the settings right. Going back to flat you will have to re adjust.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Is it possible that when changing from flat to overhead, you are kinking/bending the gun cable/liner too severely and this is screwing up the wire feed speed? Just a thought.
