What is the proper gap and land for stick welding 12in .250 wall pipe downhill? Also is the gap and land the same for both 1/8 5p and 5/32 5p?
Reply:I would have to say experiment. I was taught and came to like to end prep for downhill to grind to a sharp edge no land. Then about a 1/16" gap and run 1/8" rod at about 170 amps. Just experiment.
Reply:A clear lense for the gap and about the same for the land, 120amps with the 3.2 or 160ish with the 4mm unless the gap tightens up, then run the 3.2 at 4mm heat sort of thing.CheersI'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:My god....170Amps on a 1/8 5P.  You could cut 1/4" plate like that.
Reply:Welding downhill 7018 1/8th inch, I usually run cold 115-130 amps and stay ahead of the puddle.  You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the vertical down and a horizontal weld.
Reply:You think he might turn it down a bit. I tell you if you can't read your puddle, you got a problem. The machines we used ran around 165-170 you did'nt even see the arc you just pushed it in and moved down the arc of the pipe maintaining about a 10-15 degree forward angle back at the puddle. Worked awesome way different than uphill having to maintain a keyhole. Note I said about a 1/16" gap usually on the tight side 3/64".
