I was welding a couple parts for my father in law and decided to just run a few beads to see how they looked. I was using My new Lincoln Pro Mig 180. I had the settings on 1 or A for the heat, and 1 1/2 on wire speed.  I was using Flux Core Lincoln wire. I was welding on a piece of galvanized fence post. Here are the welds. What do you all think? Keep in mind I have only started welding again within the past month or so. I last welded 19 years ago. I have over the years run a bead or two with a stick welder repairing farm equipment such as hay cutters, rakes etc.....  Thank guys.Whitey Attached Images
Reply:Kind of tough to judge a bead on galvanized pipe.  Looks like you traveled at a good consistent speed and held the gun steady, and those are the most important things you can do in making a good weld.  Sure, you also have to figure out the correct heat settings (voltage and wire feed speed) for the given thickness, joint, and position, but making the gun move along smoothly and consistently is up to you, has nothing to do with machine settings.
Reply:Watchout when welding galvanized, it produces some of the worst fumes for a welder to breath...If you REALLY need to weld galvanized you should take of the coat with a grinder till you get to clean metal...I think there was a welder from here that got killed because of welding galvanized, me I won´t even try it...Some people suggest that you drink a glass of milk before and after the welding. They say it works...I really don´t know. And of course proper ventilation is a must. Get some mild steel and weld again so we can see what´s going on BY the looks (hard to see thou) seems you were traspassing the tube. Reply:breathing in the grinding dust from galvanized steel is just as bad as the fume it creates from welding on it.common symptoms of inhalation are similiar to that of the flu, and yes drinking milk will make you feel better if you have been exposed to alot of the zinc in the galvanizing.

Reply:Scared him away..  He will be back.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Elvergon and Zap and others, Im still kicking... Thanks for the headsup on the galvanized. I am familiar with it from Welding the fence panels at the fencing company for my father in law. However, these things need all the attention brought to them as possible. Because many will hear it once and disregard it thinking they are young or it won't happen to them. That is the attitude that does send people to their grave. Maybe if we hear it time and again, we will realize these things are true and serious and pay them the attention they deserve and our bodies deserve if we want to stay around awhile. In the first post I had just finished welding some parts for my father in law and was interested in running some practice beads with my new Lincoln and the flux core. I had only been familiar with solid wire and gas before. I wanted to get my eye on the puddle and experiment with my gun as far as moving the puddle along and getting some action to widen the bead. My short stint with the flux core was originally yeilding narrow beads so I wanted to figure out how to get them wider without making the beads look like a figure 8.( wide and thin, wide and thin....) Thanks Whitey
Reply:Quite apart from the fumes if you don't grind the zinc off you will have a contaminated weldment increasing the chance of failure under load. What works for me when using fluxcored is to do a circular movement rather than a weave, I go counterclockwise as I'm left handed and usually dragging to the left, but it gives a nice weld, I go clockwise when dragging to the right.Clive
Reply:The welds look real good. I was always told that after welding on galvanized if you welded it long time take and drink a big tall glass of milk.American By Birth, Texan By The Grace Of God.I Guess I just Don't Belong Without A Jukebox and A Country Song.Member Of the American Honky Tonk Bar AssotiationSEMPER FI

Reply:Howdy y'all!  New to the site, but not new to welding.  I have been reading on this site for several weeks just trying to improve my knowledge.  I have read in several posts about drinking milk after welding or grinding on galvanized.  Yes, it will make you feel better.  NO!!!!!!  It does not stop the poisoning going on in your body.  If you are welding on galvanized, wear a NIOSH approved respirator.  Some of the "dust masks" are now considered NIOSH approved respirator and there are some made specifically for welding.  However, these masks are not good for eating large amounts of smoke.  With my welding skills, I won't give advice about beads or how to weld, but I make a living trying to keep people out of the hospital.  I appreciate all the informative posts I have been reading on here.  It has improved my welding greatly.Mark
