I'm looking for a tig rig that will allow me to do these jobs. I have been looking at Miller Econotig 230V 52A if I were to buy a new one. Does this have the juice to weld T45 tubing?  I'm not at all opposed to buying used or remanufactured, and I don't care what brand, so what are peoples recommendations for machines?-Chris
Reply:What wall thickness of tubing?  That makes all the difference. What's your budget v. "how nicely the machine works" parameters?
Reply:It should be able to weld 1.5 x .120 tubing. For the budget maybe 1,500ish.
Reply:Well I have a squarewave 175 Lincoln that I bought for a specific job, and I will say that for just oddball hobby type work it does pretty well.  Now it won't compete with my Larger machine, but for what it was designed to do I was impressed.  I think now you can get the Precision Tig 185 from Lincoln (which has more bells and whistles) in your price range as well as the miller equivalent.  Me personally, I would say keep your eyes open.  Good used machines come along quite often, and its very possible to get a good used machine for the same money,  that will give you a good bit more capacity.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Look for a used Miller Dynasty 200.
Reply:Yeah I'm also checking my local classifieds for used stuff, I have always had decent luck buying used things, knock on wood.   Just looked up the L.E. TIG 185 and that looks like a great machine for what I want to do.  Thanks for the info guys.
Reply:A Miller EconoTIG will work great for those applications. I have one with low hours on it. I'd like to sell it and get a shopmate 300. I'll let it go for $1200 shipped.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:MicroZone - I will keep that in mind, currently I'm on vacation in the florida keys so I can't get to my credit union and buy cool welders for another week. Looking at the specs between the econotig and precision 185, would the low amp settings (5 amps for 185 vs. 20 ampsfor the econo) be okay when welding thin aluminum piping, say intercooler piping?
Reply:Precision TIG 185....mine has done many intercooler pipes and such. For the bigger jobs such as roll cages, you'll have no problems. I paid $1700 for mine with the pedal and hand control. It will go low and has the balls when needed.
Reply:Yes, I've done many IC's, pipes, radiator shrouds, catch cans, specialized brackets, merge collectors and tons of other stuff. No problem, I was just throwing that out there...didn't expect you to run to the bank. You have first dibs if you want it.
