Reply:Hey good luck with your report.  I am also curious about all of CorMagga's questions.  Post up!! ***Stick welding like, woah.***
Reply:I don't like welding when its 95 out and I am in the sun standing on freshly laid blacktop.I like most of the rest of it.  I'll never be rich, but I do get a lot of satisfaction out of build and repairing things.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I totally agree with David R. When its hot it's no fun. But there is alot of gratification in taking something old and making it new again. alot of people don't know anything at all about what we do and when we fix something for them it seems as if they are sometimes just amazed. now that is good stuff. I fixed a small windmill replica, you know the kind you see in yards, for this old guy the other day. Come to find out his son had bought it for him before he passed away. He was just thrilled, and going into this project, I had no idea. Goes to show a job worth doing is worth doing right. Even when you don't have to.I too will never probably get rich welding, but I love going to work most days. Not many people can say that.
Reply:Here lately we're working at least 60hrs and some 70hr weeks.  I used to really enjoy coming to work until I took the supervisor position on nights.  Now I have to put up other people, it really ain't worth another $2/hr.  But it's really nice when you can come in and build stuff and don't have to put up with anyone else.  As far as my welding on the side it's great when I get a job which is few and far between.  As far as pay when I started I was making $7/hr at a small fab shop here in town and I learned a lot working for them.  It was an older man and his son that ran it and they wound up being like family.  I was there for 4 years and when I left I was making $11/hr and came to a job making $12/hr.  I've been here for a little over 4 years now and am making $18.75/hr.  Nowhere near getting rich money but it pays the bills and lets my wife stay home with the kids.  I'm still poor DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools

Reply:I like how all the people I interact with use all the vowels and consonents when they correspond with me.
Reply:I love fabricating. I love seeing something that I built ( sense of accomplishment ). I don't have anyone looking over my shoulder. I don't have to deal with the public. I guess that the only really bad thing when it get hot and humid. I make $17hr. I've been with the company for 11 years. Get rich? Not doing what I do. Like Littlefuzz says lets the wife stay home with the kids and that's what's really important. "Every choice you make will effect at least one other person"
Reply:Cormagga:  You are in living in Boomtown.  After five years and a welders apprenticeship completed you should be making at least 25 an hour Canadian.  If you are responsible and have no substance abuse problems you likely will be offered leadhand work for more money.  If you are good you will be turning down 30 dollars an hour.   Working conditions vary.  You can easily ruin yourself with taking the tough guy attitude.  Wear the safety equipment supplied and don't be a hero and put your back out.     Many people take the out of town jobs and have no home life.  If you get married you can look to a future of divorce and support payments.  Don't take the long hours offered to you or the out of town work unless you are single or your spouse FULLY supports you in the decision.   People do make 100,000 a year but at a price to their personal lives.
Reply:It all depends on what you want to get into, here in the midwest the average production welder makes between $12.00 and $15.00 an hour. I call on several contractors working on ethanol plant construction and the pipe welders are making $22.00-$30.00 an hour, plus $65.00-$80.00 a day per diem. But like lotechman stated, these guys are away from their families a lot, they'll stay on a site for awhile then move on to the next job, great if you are single, but sucks if you've got a family at home. One suggestion would be to go to work for a fab shop where you see all different kinds of jobs, as there is a big difference between a guy sitting in a booth all day welding the same parts, and a guy that has a customer bring him a blueprint and says "build this for me" I have nothing against the guy production welding, as I spent 4 years under the hood myself. The path I chose was tech school for 1-1/2 years, weld for 4 and the last 17 I've worked for a welding suppply company, and am currently in outside sales. I feel like I'm the luckiest person in the world, as I still deal with people that weld for a living, and every customer or application I see is different than the previous call. I have a huge passion for this industry and live, eat and breathe this stuff.  What I would suggest to you, is to find something you enjoy doing in this field and go at it full bore. I do not feel what I'm doing is "work" as I enjoy it very much, I've always felt I would never want to win the lottery, as I wouldn't want to quit my job, nuts huh!!! Maybe I could win just enough to retire the wife, yet still keep working myself. Good Luck, and keep us posted.

Reply:Heres how the apprentice peroiod pay is over 5 years. http://www.mcadetroit.org/documents/PF07_Apprentice.pdfHere is journeyman scale.http://www.mcadetroit.org/documents/PF07_Journeyman.pdfLast edited by J Speak; 07-14-2007 at 10:01 AM.
Reply:Apprenticeship rates in Canada are similar in that there is an increment every six months.  If you are any good you will make more than the minimum rate set down for that level of apprentice.   I worked for one employer who had several apprentices.  One day I made the comment to one young fellow that he must have got another increment in the last month or so.  He didn't know that he was due for a six month increment and the employer conveniently forgot to give it to him.  He went up to the front office the next day and they gave him his raise. One has to ask about everything because no one looks after you except yourself.   Also I have seen the union rate posted on the wall.  Not everyone got that rate.  Some people who were highly prized by management and able to produce got more than the contract wage.  These people kept their mouths shut about their wage rate of course or the golden goose would stop producing extra greenbacks.   Trades qualifications gives the worker an extra edge in terms of working conditions.  He is not obliged to stay with one employer if he is not treated fairly.  Also tradesmen network just like the suit and tie executives.  We know who the good employers are and who will ask you to work in unsafe conditions.  We trade phone numbers and contact each other when we hear of a big job coming up.  We can ask other by phone about possible jobs and working conditions.   There is a local newspaper ad that regularly advertises for welders.  On the bottom it says "call John at..."  I have never worked for the guy but everyone I talked to knows about John.  That is why he has to advertise for workers so regularly.

Reply:hi from the uk...interesting reading about how the industry is going over there, over here it is getting better at the moment and there is a lot of work out here. i live about an hour outside london and with good rates with overtime can achieve £30,000 a year, don't know the exchange rate to dollars but i live ok on it, about time to after 20 years learning the trade.  But i would like to know if you have a skilled workforce shortage over there as we do here, there aint to many youngsters keen to get dirty for a living over here it seems and that means the jobs are easy pickings and we really are sought after. ...thanx for reading and looking forward to your replies....
