Hi guys, I work for a residential facility for juvenile delinquent boys. We currently house 190 young men. We recently created a new program designed to give our young men a leg up into the working world upon graduating our program. I'll be heading up a few phases of this process including creating technical training classes that certify our guys in entry level positions, and creating an on-campus business. One trade that I feel will really interest our young men as well as teach them a trade that will be useful to them is welding. I found a training program we would most likely use through AWS called the SENSE program. They would provide the teaching materials, we provide the instructor and everything else. I am looking for information to report to our upper management about cost, space and equipment needed, but more importantly to us, safety concerns and things we need to employ to be in compliance with safety standards (ventilation, fire safety, etc.) This along with any other information you feel might be useful to me would be greatly appreciated both by myself and by the many young men who will benefit from this program. Thanks in advance!
Reply:You will need..Welders..Welders And More Welders of every shape and process..Saws..Grinders..Steel..Benches..Drill Presses..Vises..Drills..Lathes..Bridgeports..Chop Saws..Grinding Discs..Air Compressor.. Lines.. Quick Disconnects..Air tools..Electric tools..Wire brushes..Argon..Helium..Guages and Hoses For above..Oxygen..Acetelyne..Hoses..Heating Tips..Cut off Torch...Guages for above...Masks..Gloves..Welding rods...Place to keep everything..Water..Paitence..Are you sure Problem Childs with all this in there hands is a good thing??...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:To address all of your questions it would make a book the size of a Dallas phone book. Hope fully their training program would address the osha compliance issues. How many of these 190 young men would be going through this class at one time? Obviously you're not going to make welders out of all of them. I don't think that one instructor could handle more than 20 or 25 at one time. That is if they are well behaved and want to learn. Just dealing welding for now for 20 students you would need 10 buzz box stick welders, 10 O/A set ups plumbed to a manifold system, 1 or 2 mig welders, 1 tig welder and hopefully 1 engine driven welder. That is if you're going to train them for entry level welders. Now if you're going just train them well enough to get an entry level production line welder get 20 migs and you can turn out 15-20 trigger monkeys in a few weeks.

Reply:The school I went to had little booths with dark tinted shower curtain type things instead of doors. The welder would be outside the booth and inside was about a 2 foot by 3 foot steel table, just below chest level with an exhaust duct about 2 feet above it. Lets face it, not many of these kids are likely headed to Ivy League colleges after they get out, nothing wrong with offering to teach them skills that could get them a respectable job.
Reply:Thanks guys. You are right, we won't be putting all the guys through at once. We will be focusing on the older guys and guys who've finished High School or have their GED. Our class sizes will realistically be 5-10 at first. I think you might be surprised, Zap, at what our young men are capable of with the environment we offer. In the past year, we've fielded a national champion power lifting team, a state-qualifying cross country team, a JV basketball team with a 90% win record, and a track and field athlete who qualified for state in three events, took 2nd in the 100M and 1st in the 200M. Ok, I'll stop bragging now. In any event, I appreciate you guys taking the time to help on this. If you think of anything else, just drop a line.
Reply:Good to see that you have realistic goals for class size. The diploma or GED is a good thing. While welding itself may not look like it requires it the successful student will need to show his employer that he can do basic math and read and understand things like an MSDS sheet. |
