I'm doing some abstract artsy welding stuff and have to weld steel pieces right at the welding table level. What is the best thing to put between the table and the project? I've heard of plate Al, copper etc. But how thick. I need it stay realitivley flat and not warp. And not that expensive, approx 32"X32". Plywood sucks. Thanks
Reply:Practice, practice, practice!!! If you get a small tack to the table, just use a sharp cold chisel and hammer to knock it loose. Alum or copper plate thick enough to stay flat is going to hurt the wallet!!!! Reply:Sorry, I understand, now.Sounds like you want to preserve your table.Last edited by tapwelder; 08-08-2007 at 10:11 AM.
Reply:A piece of hardibacker works well enough and costs very little but you would have to keep the work clamp on the work.Favorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.
Reply:I've some aluminium flats that I use. They're about 50mm wide x 2mm thick and about a foot long. I just move them around under the welds.
Reply:Thanks for the tips. What is hardibacker?

Reply:Great idea. I'll get a peice of that, thanks.
Reply:Another good Idea! I have 2 sheets of 1/2" durarock cement board 5 feet from my welding table and never thought of using it.Mike
Reply:You could also spray some anti-splatter in the area. There is also another product that has been discussed here, something like "black magic" or black something. It is another non-stick agent for MIG nozzles.NO ONE TELL MY WIFE ABOUT HARDI BACKER. That will ruin my excuse for buying the materials to build a nice table!!!!Rob PageMiller Bobcat 250Lincoln SP170-T
Reply:I use a product by weld-aid called weld-kleen 350. It is great for preventing spatter. Though it doesn't eliminate tacking to the table.
