In the next few months I will be aquiring a plasma cutter. My question is; I will be cutting .05" sheet to 1" plate. Will one machine do it or will I need two? Will the heavier machine cut as neatly on the thin stuff as a machine more designed for lighter materials?
Reply:For a quality cut at 1", you will need at least a Miller Spectrum 2050 (55A- 60A plasma no matter what brand), these are rated at 7/8" but you will still get a quality cut at one inch. If you're not aware of plasma ratings, they are designated at rated cut, quality cut and severance cut...with rated cut being the best. These machines are around $2100 to $2200 retail, at their lowest pricing. If you don't have the finances for a machine, I would ask the local metal shops to just cut your metal for you, it would be cheaper in the long run.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Thanks for the info. This unit is for company use so we will have the budget for whatever if needed. If I can save money that is fine. I like the idea of a fine cut kit to go with the heavier machine.Ideas Without Action are Folly |
