Hey folks, natural gas, 42 inch pipe...what spec are they welding too ?Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:Typically guys that are running the oil and gas pipe "outside the fence" are welding to API 1104.Arguing with a Welding Engineer is like wrestling with a pig... after a while you realize the pig likes it
Reply:Hey Olddad,I looked up our specs and it is API 1104 just like reddoggoose said.  I work for a natural gas pipeline.  For us, the size of mainline transmission is all the same as far as the specs go, i.e. 20", 24", 30", 36", 42".Are you thinking about working on the Rockies Express?  Just wandering, it is big talk around here, maybe affecting how our pipeline will flow in a couple years. Also just a note, I am not a pipeline welder, just spent many, many hours with that freakin' 9" grinder in my hands and trying to learn as much as I can from the welders.  I am now a station operator, so I don't get to do too much grinding these days on the pipeline. Thanks,JasonMillermatic 210 w/ SpoolgunMiller 375 ExtremeMiller Trailblazer 250GMiller AEAD 200-LEVictor Journeyman O/A
Reply:West Baden Iron, yes, that Rockies Express did catch my ear. Haven't found much info on it though, other than the business side of things. Good that you got away from that grinder, they make for a painful retirement if you're on them for too many years.reddoggoose, Thanks for the heads up. My local source didn't have any idea, all I had until last night was "somebody said that somebody had said". Found out what the deal was last night so wanted to find out what they welded to.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT

Reply:Roger that, from what my dad tells me, retirement can be boring. He's always looking for something to do. If I don't get busy, I'll never be able to retire!  (edit - i can never remember this icon, hahaa)Kudos to you for trying to keep busy. Pipeline work, from what I hear, is long days and big pay.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:I believe the Rocky Mountain Express is X80 pipe. I've heard that they're running selfshield wire on it. Don't know if that's happening on all the spreads or just a few. First time I've heard of self shield being used on a major pipeline in the US. I do know that it is used frequently in Asia and the Middle East. These high yield steels don't sit to well with the old days of cellulostic rods. Problem is you can't use the old 5P+ and 70+ for welding X80, the hydrogen from the rods will cause hydrogen cracking.Be curious to see how the pipeliners react to the different wire.Last edited by reddoggoose; 08-21-2007 at 01:13 PM.Arguing with a Welding Engineer is like wrestling with a pig... after a while you realize the pig likes it
Reply:Hey OD,What part of the midwest are you from?  I have a few connections with my company and some of the contractors we have used and may be able to steer you in the right (or some) direction.  Were you wanting to work specifically on the REX?  I know just about every contractor and pipeline company (and possibly union hall) are scrounging for weldors.  If you are certified, I would guess you could work for just about whomever and wherever you want. This of course is what I am hearing from our weldors and guys that travel quite a bit.  I just talked to our weldor a few minutes ago and this is what he is telling me.Thanks,JasonMillermatic 210 w/ SpoolgunMiller 375 ExtremeMiller Trailblazer 250GMiller AEAD 200-LEVictor Journeyman O/A
