I have a project that may require boring out tubing to a larger ID (1.5"~) that is 36" long but don't know how to do this?Also I would like to rifle a 2" AL tube How is this done?Me!

Reply:Well you would have to bore it on a lathe, but that's a deep boring job for something that size.  How precise will it have to be?  Could you possibly purchase something the size you need?  As far as the rifling goes you can do it on a lathe as well.  Best bet would be to take the pieces to an experienced machine shop and let them quote you a price.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:that is one heck of a long bore. to get a good finnish, it would chatter real bad. O and you would need the mythical boring bar of  Bora-Bora that has magic properties.maybe bore or drill from both ends(try to break the chips so you can blow them out) and hone.rifleing  you can do half *** by pulling the right bar all the way through in one clean motion while machine is turning. you get one shot so practice. or you can get it done on a rifleing machine. i bet that is big money. hydraulic tube/pipe is on size 1.5"dont know where you are going with your project-cannon?Last edited by Eaglelox; 09-01-2007 at 03:39 PM.IPS Owner/[email protected]
Reply:Thanks guys, I did not thing it would be an easy task to do.  I was more curious how it was done? I just don't see how you can accurately bore out something that long and small.  So how do they make rifle barrels 32" long?Would it be better to start with a solid blank and bore it and then turn it down?Me!
Reply:You can buy tubing made to size in almost any material/wall thickness..We do it all the time.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Me!,  I build custom rifles in my spare time, and a barrel is not easily or cheaply produced.  If you want to know how a rifle barrel is made check out Lilja's website.  http://www.riflebarrels.com    Look in the article section and it will give you an overview of how they are produce theirs.  There are multiple ways to manufacturer a barrel. A hammer forged barrel are made by taking a barrel blank that has been drilled with a deep hole drill, and is then slid over a mandrel with a reverse or the rifling machined into it, then the blank is heated and beat against the mandrel until it is tight against the mandrel and after cooling it basically screwed off the mandrel producing a rifled bore.  Then it would be put in a lathe and contoured, chambered, threaded, and crowned.   This is the cheapest form of barrel making and the most popular with mass produced fire arms.  Higher quality barrels are deep hole drilled, and broach cut.  Meaning a broach is pulled down the bore cutting the rifling as it goes.   Do a search for the major manufacturers.  Shilen, hart, lilja, Krieger, etc....  You should find some decend info about it if you are curious.  ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
