Just wondering what the opinions are about sites like speedymetals.com onlinemetals.com metalexpress.com etc in regards to prices. I don't have a lot of time to check out the local scrap yards and there are not that many near me either most if not all are 1/2hr away or farther. My main question is how are the online suppliers prices compared to what you get at some of your Local metal dealers/suppliers or superstores everyone else seems to have nearby? I know many will probably have the bulk discount or another price difference than a home/hobby customer but some guidance on what I should be paying would be helpful. I got a quote from Arco Steel in NJ and thought they'd have good prices but their quotes left much to be desired. All in all more than 2x what the same order would cost me from Speedymetal with shipping plus no 1/2hr ride there, load/unload, 1/2hr back, tolls and gas etc. I was really surprised that most of Speedy's prices were 1/2-1/3 of Arco's.

Reply:Most of the steel I require for my projects doesn't have to be mill fresh. I buy from Steel & Metal Liquidators in New Castle, Delaware...no state sales tax. 35 to 40 cents per pound for steel, $1.25 for aluminum and $1.50 for stainless. They excess for a Jersey company, Joseph Fazzio, Inc. (do a google search) which might be in your neck of the garden state. Like a Home Depot, but for metal users. Also good place for discounted drops and end pieces is Yarde Metals.com. I buy alu square tubing from them.Last edited by 69 chevy; 09-06-2007 at 11:06 PM.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
Reply:i like onlinemetals.com, its great if you only need two feet of something. it's pricier than my local supplier, but again, its nice if you need small quantities, cheaper than buying a twelve or twenty foot length of something that i only need a couple feet.

Reply:im curious to research some of these online retailers, but I currently drive 30 minutes to a place very similar to what 69 Chevy was talking about... |
