ok guys,I'm making a pressure washing booth out of 1/8" diamond plate(floor(the spool gun is going crazy on me,last week I was doing fine, today,,,,I'm blowing holes all over the place.Any suggestions?I've tried turning the amps up an down, and the wire feed,it still blows all over no matter what I try.
Reply:What is your travel speed?
Reply:got the spool gun on 7,1/2
Reply:alu welding is faster then steel you got to go quite fast no time to pausethe day you stop learning in this tradeis the day your in your grave
Reply:I know that this is an obvious question, but have you cleaned it right before trying to weld it?
Reply:wire brushed(stainless)and MEK after that
Reply:Blastingcoffee,Pardon me if it's already been stated, but would help us to help you if we knew more about your set up.Machine/spoolgun you're using?  Does it have pulse capability?  Volts and WS?Type and dia of wire.GasSeries aluminum plate.Has the procedure worked before?I have used a MM251 w/30A Spoolgun on 1/8" aluminum and it does a great job, but you do have to move fast.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:my bad!!I am using a millermatic250,running at 20voltswire feed set to 200 on machine/7,1/2 on spool gun(spoolmatic30a)argon.I get a lot better results holding the tip about an inch away form the work surface, maybe I was getting too close?it sure seems like I'm running a race with it,hahaha!!!!thanks!!!
Reply:When I do 1/8" tread, I use a higher voltage and a slower wirefeed to get a nice spray. I've never had luck with pulse on 1/8".Also, make sure your tip is recessed about 1/4" inside of the nozzle.
Reply:blastingcoffee,Same setup as mine.Try dropping your voltage to about 19V.  The 30A is rated for 70 to 875 ipm.  At 7.5 you're over 600 ipm.  Try slowing wirefeed down to about 5. if using .030 wire, 4.5 if using .035 wire. Are you using 4043 or 5356 wire?   If the part is not going to be anodized you can run the 4043, which many feel flows out better than the 5356.  If the part is going to be anodized (I suspect not in this case), you should use the 5356 because the 4043 will turn black.1/2" to 5/8" stickout is fine with aluminum.  Any closer and I tend to trash the nozzle. Some will say that the only way to weld aluminum is with spray, but for 1/8" without pulse, I have a hard time preventing blowthrough at spray settings.  I think short arc will be fine for your application.Hope this helps.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:again, sorryI am using  4043 .035 wire I'll take a pic of it when I remember to bring my camera, its all finished now. Some of it looks like crap and will have to be ground and rewelded,,,but it's donethank the gods!!!It was really hot and humid this week here.
Reply:I just love migging many feet of 3/8" aluminum plate on a 95 degree humid day.
