welder night mare week

ok this has been one of those weeks first the sae-300 launched a rod ( very amazing to here and see what a continetal does to its self ) second prob I started using my hobart 500 with a perkins 4-236 every thing went great till half way threw the day running 1/4 7018 I went to change eletrodes and boom, (ever seen the disney fireworks display???) well turns out the insulation on the copper ribbons rotted off ( age) and cross arched , so have any of you ever had the windings redone in a hobart ? or are we looking at scrapp and putting the perkins in the lincoln 300 ?? open to ideas ? beginning to think will I was in the under water welding class I should have taken up the basket weaving as well
Reply:Thats a bad day... Probably better off taking it apart and seperating the copper from the steel...Scrap prices are way up...Adapting one powerplant from another is not impossible...Sometimes even if you have the parts to "make it happen"...If its not a D.I.Y. job it may cost more than its worth.......zap!Last edited by zapster; 09-13-2007 at 09:21 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:well priced it out and will cost 1600 to rewind it so the perkins will have a new home, in a ( sae-300) and the hobart is going to scrap .

Reply:Where are you located? Try getting some quotes from shops that rewind larger industrial electric motors before you scrap it out.

A welder repair center??That sounds ridiculously high to me, like over a grand more than it ought'a.We got a local guy that does starters, alternators, and just about any other motor or generator you bring him. Been in business for 40 years, does top-notch work... I would bet he'd price it around $400-$500. Reply:well I looked in to it more but this is a older hobartand so far it did some damage to the armature ( a piece of the copper ribbon) broke loose aand loged in the armaure windings its looking pretty grim , and for the hp rateing continental f245 vs perkins4-236 there pretty close ,the perkins has a torqe range above the gasser, but then thats a diesel for ya.
