Ok heres what i got, I built my 4x7 trailer and I havent quite welded all my steel plate on top because i dont know if i am going to notch out the back of the trailer where the fire box will sit to make it sit lower on the trailer. Pictures to come. Now for the question, I designed my trailer around the smoker I had in mine, now i am second guessing myself on the smoker design. I have a piece of 5ft 24inch pipe and another piece of 24inch pipe for my firebox. This will be the third smoker I am building and all the other ones i offset my firebox 12 inches, so basically i split the difference inbetween the two pipes so it is equal on both sides if that makes any sense. So... Do guys think i am underpowering my smoker by only using a 24inch long smokebox, or will it be adequate. Also is my firebox offset the right amount of distance. I will post pictures soon of my work in progress. Thanks, NickNick
Reply:Trailgoose I think its more of a preference thing. We have a smoker that we use at church that was donated and the guy who built it put a 5 ft 30in diameter smoker across the back parallel to the tail lights and then put the fire box on the tongue side of the smoker. The firebox is about 18 inches in front of the smoker connected to the smoker with a smaller pipe that comes up into the bottom of the main smoker. It works great and keeps the heat away from the front door of the smoker where everyone congregates anyway. It delivers plenty of thermals for the food. I guess it depends on how hot you think you need the smoker to get. The closer the firebox is to the smoker the more heat it will impart.MichaelMillermatic 25115" Rockwell Drill Press10" Logan Lathe5hp - 2-stage 80 Gallon CompressorHome Made Sand / Soda Blaster
Reply:This is what I am doing. I am using a 500 gal propane tank sitting flat. Opens the long way to fit a whole pig in it. Smoke manifold made from 3-4" pipe down the middle, with a 100 pound propane tank as the fire box, with a damper on it. The smoke stack is on the oppisite end. It also will have a removeable rack to make it double as a big azz grill.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ." |
