Im new to the welding scene. Im currently in evening classes while I teach art at a local high school. Bottom line is I am not cut out for the pubic school system and need to make a change. I plan on taking classes in stick, mig and tig. I have had some construction experience and am familiar with the steel work associated with commercial construction. Im not really sure what other welding vocations would be available in a bigger city (KC,MO). I love motorcycles and off-road stuff, what guy doesn't, but Im not sure if that's really a career path. Im also intersted in building public sculpture but Im not sure who gets hired to build those types of projects. Anyway. . . What are some areas to look into, internships ect? What does everyone do for welding work and how do they like it? All advice/info greatly appreciated. Thanks - Avery
Reply:There is definitely a career in 4WD or motorcycle fabrication. But you will have to build a reputation, which will take some time. Motorcycle fab has to be very clean, or 'fine'. 4WD on the other hand, has two groups. One group doesn't know, or doesn't care about quality, and probably drives a mall crawler. The other, is very picky. You have to figure out which you want to cater to, or if you want to deal with both.As far as internships, there are probably several local welding shops in your area. Check the yellow pages under "welding" mine has 3 or 4 pages worth. Some of them may need employees. What I do for welding work, is quite a lot. I specialize in chassis modification, 4-links, and air ride. But also build miniature motorcycles, barstool racers, gates, and the occasional tube bumper.Lincoln PowerMIG 215XTLincoln Precision TIG 225Hypertherm 300
